About Collagen Induction Therapy

Collagen Induction Therapy is a skin rejuvenation treatment for the face and body that improves the thickness and texture of the skin, reducing discoloration caused by sun damage and evening out the skin tone. As the name implies this treatment induces the skin and its deeper layers to make large amounts of new collagen which can then lift and tighten and improve the skin.

Collagen Induction Therapy also has an anti-ageing effect because it enables greater absorption of stimulating growth peptide serums which nourish and improve the quality of the skin.  It is an ideal treatment for patients who want to reduce the appearance of scar tissue, for example scars caused by acne. The treatment stimulates the blood supply to the areas being treated encouraging new skin cell growth and repair as well as stimulating the production of new collagen.

How does Collagen Induction Therapy work?

To avoid any risk of infection, Collagen Induction Therapy must be performed under completely sterile conditions. Staff at Wimpole Aesthetics will thoroughly clean the skin and will then apply a topical anaesthetic cream to numb the treatment area of your face or body. Once numb, a hand-held multi-needled medical roller device will then be rapidly moved back-and-forth across the area to be treated, causing the needles to penetrate into your skin.

How long does the treatment take?

It normally takes about 30 minutes for the topical anaesthetic cream to numb the area, and a further 30 minutes to complete each treatment of Collagen Induction Therapy. You will need a short rest and can then be away. All in all you may be in the clinic for about 90 minutes.

What happens after the treatment?

The immediate visual effect after Collagen Induction Therapy is a series of tiny pink or red needle marks on your skin. These close rapidly because the skin will automatically start its usual healing processes. The marks will often disappear the same day but your skin may appear as if you have moderate sunburn for a day or two.

You will be given advice on a suitable lotion to sooth and calm your skin until all the redness has disappeared, and instructions on how to wash and care for your skin at home, including how to protect your skin from sunlight. You will probably be given a short course of a suitable antibiotic.

Over the next few weeks you will start to notice the visible signs of skin regeneration and repair, with a much improved complexion, reduced appearance of acne scarring and more even skin tone.

How many treatments are necessary?

Collagen Induction Therapy involves a course of 3 or more medical treatments plus continuing therapy at home, assessed by your practitioner during your consultation and based on the condition of your skin before treatment.  It isn’t a quick-fix treatment. It takes several weeks for the skin to stimulate and form new collagen after this treatment, gradually giving visible signs of regeneration and an improved complexion.

For ongoing skin stimulation a hand held non medical multi-needled roller can be used at home.  The needles on this roller are much shorter and finer, so no anaesthetic is necessary. You will be given full instructions on how to continue the treatment at home, to enhance and prolong the skin health benefits.
