About Scar Reduction Treatment
It is usually not possible to completely remove a surgical, traumatic or post-inflammatory scar. However, it may be possible to considerably reduce the appearance of the scar and the surrounding area. This may be a complex process or may be very simple depending upon the age of the scar, its position shape and size, as well as the cause of the scar. At the first consultation you will be advised as to the recommended method of scar reduction treatment and the chances of getting a good result. You may be advised to “leave well alone”, as not all scars can be reduced and improved.
How does it work?
The method of scar reduction treatment will depend upon the scar and how it was caused in the first instance such as surgical scars or cut, burns from hot water or acne of chicken pox scars.
This may involve the use of an ablative fractional carbon dioxide laser to achieve some resurfacing or may require some steroid injections to reduce keloid scarring or may even include complete excision and revision of the scar.
How long does the treatment take?
The time of scar treatment, and the number of scar treatment sessions required, will depend upon the scar and upon the needs of the patient as well as the outcome they are looking to achieve.
How many treatments are necessary?
Completely dependent on the scar and end point of patient satisfaction. Some scar treatments are limited to how much better you can make the scar, some patients will want to be as near perfect as possible and others will be happy with a good improvement.
Does it hurt?
Scar reduction treatment usually does not hurt unless in extreme cases.
Cost
Depends on end result required.
